The College System Network Architect position provides enterprise level design, planning, development, implementation, and life-cycle support strategies for NC Community College System (NCCCS) Local and Wide Area Network architectures. The position works across the enterprise with colleges, MCNC (NCREN), carriers, and service providers to ensure efficient, effective, and secure broadband educational and research networks in support of students, faculty, and staff – regardless of their physical location. The position engages and coordinates with state and regional players and teams to design and maintain reliable and accessible network architectures and enables colleges to successfully deploy and use NCCCS’s College Information and Technology Systems, Distance Education and Learning Management Systems, numerous Educational Environments and Learning Object Repositories, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities, Virtual Computing Environments and Laboratories, Educational Research, and Engineering environments in support of the educational mission and achieve successful student outcomes.
The position’s role includes the coordinated development and maintenance of system-wide network configuration and security standards, best practices, as well as providing College System-wide direction and guidance for the employment, modification, and integration of network technologies and services. The position considers the full range of local, regional, and state-level network systems and communications capabilities, as well as the various layered products and services used to support the entire enterprise stack of information, application, and other technology capabilities.
Work involves statewide programmatic oversight responsibilities, the ability to proactively respond to complex system challenges, isolate and diagnose root cause issues at the enterprise level; quickly identify and employ resolution approaches to very complex technical problems. The position must simultaneously direct and guide work performed by hundreds of college technical staff, business systems analysts, application developers, and systems specialists.
